Susan Sontag, (1933-2004), was a prolific cultural critic, writer, filmmaker, and political activist. Her breadth of knowledge reflects the risks she took in her career. Sontag took untouched subjects such as camp and pornography, and engaged with them in a scholarly manner. Her most notable works include On Photography and Notes on Camp. This risk and breadth was reflected in Sontag’s personal life in her strong opposition to the Vietnam War, the Siege of Sarajevo, and in her sophisticated way of speaking about such issues. A controversial figure, her work has been extravagantly denounced and praised. The Fall 2016 Collaborative Project class is thrilled present Interpreting Sontag—a collection that reflects her literary and public life.
