Artists in California have been combining art and technology for many decades.
These artistic forms of investigation are more relevant and compelling than ever before, particularly in the Bay Area with its culture of technological innovation, emphasis on social media, and DIY ethos.
Students in the Art and Technology at SFAI learn the technical, conceptual, historical, and theoretical skills needed to produce contemporary art using technological forms such as time-based and networked media, digital media, audio, programming, and electronics.
Inherently interdisciplinary, our department offers students the opportunity to explore the ways that technology has infused traditional approaches to art-making, as well as creating possibilities for the invention of new media practices.
Hacking the Coordinates: Positionality and the Repellent Fence
Postcommodity is an interdisciplinary arts collective composed of Raven Chacon, Cristóbal Martínez (SFAI Faculty), and Kade L. Twist and is based in the southwestern United States. The collective operates through a shared Indigenous lens that engages the assaultive manifestations of the global market. Postcommodity works to forge new metaphors to rationalize our shared experiences within an increasingly challenging contemporary environment. Through indigenous narratives of cultural self-determination, Postcommodity pushes back against the ever-increasing velocities and complex forms of violence that have colonized the 21st century.
For Alejandro Almanza Pereda, Rivera is a catalyst for the ongoing instrumentalization of Latin American identity and artistic practice. The curious history of Rivera’s SFAI fresco and its magnetism for tourists has long spurred interventions by artists. Throughout the 1950s and 60s, it was curtained off, and a provisional wall was constructed to obscure—it’s not known exactly what—yet it was perhaps a moment in which the tyrannies of McCarthyism and Abstract Expressionism entwined.
