School of Interdisciplinary Studies

We believe that critical thinking, research, and writing are essential for engaging with contemporary global society.
The School of Interdisciplinary Studies offers degrees in History and Theory of Contemporary Art, Urban Studies, and Exhibition and Museum Studies, while also encompassing critical theory, English, humanities, mathematics, natural science, social science, and writing. Emphasizing the role of both theory and practice, the programs are flexible and permeable, allowing students to follow their interests and chart their own paths.
The Centers for Interdisciplinary Study
-Art and Science
-Media Culture
-Public Practices
-Word, Text, and Image
The four centers aligned under the School of Interdisciplinary Studies are exclusively teaching and research centers that support all degree programs at SFAI. They do not function as departments; instead, their goal is to produce seminars, projects, symposia, exhibitions, and lectures in and by means of which theory and practice are constantly intermixed.
