Supervised housing provides SFAI PreCollege students with a convenient, affordable, and secure living environment that supports their artistic growth. A professional student housing staff and a team of enthusiastic full-time SFAI students committed to campus leadership live with PreCollege students, helping to familiarize them with the school and its surroundings.

The SFAI Residence Hall, Sutter Hall, is conveniently situated near San Francisco’s downtown district in Lower Nob Hill at 717 Sutter Street and is centrally located near the historic 800 Chestnut Street campus.

Just steps away from Union Square, the neighborhood is alive with galleries, alternative art spaces, world-renowned museums, shopping, restaurants, and other entertainment venues. Public transportation to the SFAI campus and throughout San Francisco is readily available. The Powell Street BART and Muni station, the cable car stop, and several bus lines are all within walking distance of Sutter Hall. Each PreCollege student living at Sutter Hall receives a transportation pass allowing free access to the city’s public transit system.

Residence Hall Amenities

Community Kitchen: Residents enjoy cooking and eating together in a community kitchen. The facility is equipped with everything residents need to prepare food, including a full-size oven, stove top, microwaves, and toasters.

Laundry: Coin-operated washers and dryers are conveniently located in the residence halls. Residents may use quarters to purchase affordable wash and dryer cycles.

Internet Access and Computers: The residence hall is equipped with wireless Internet throughout the building and in the rooms. Residents also share use of community computers located in the building.

Cable Television: Each student room is equipped with a television, basic cable, and a DVD player.

Recreation Room: Residents relax and socialize in the fully furnished recreation room equipped with a pool table and foosball table, as well as a large-screen television. This popular community space is also used for residence hall programs and activities.

Be sure to check "I am applying for housing" on your PreCollege application. A Housing Application Form will be sent to you upon acceptance into the program.

Housing assignments are based on gender and the student comments on the housing form. We are unable to provide housing assignment or roommate information prior to move-in.
