The Art School Alliance Scholarship was launched in 2010 with the goal of intensifying links and exchange with renowned art universities within Europe, China, and the United States. 01/26/11 SFAI Faculty and Alumni Awarded Eureka Fellowships for 2011-2013

Sponsored by the Fleishhacker Foundation, the fellowships provide an unrestricted grant of $25,000 to Bay Area visual artists, and are the largest cash prize for individual artists in the Bay Area.

The four winners—Ancalmo and Jacobsen, along with Ruth Laskey and Kamau Amu Patton—were chosen from more than 250 artists nominated by Bay Area art professionals, and will be featured in an exhibition at SFMOMA opening in fall 2011.

Kathryn Bigelow, who studied painting at SFAI in the late 60s and early 70s, became the first woman ever to win a best-director Oscar, for her film The Hurt Locker.

Each foundation has awarded SFAI $60,000 in order to support six Distinguished Visiting Photography Fellowships and six Distinguished Visiting Painting Fellowships that will augment and enrich SFAI’s curriculum.

05/12/09 SFAI Awarded $68,000 by the National Endowment for the Arts for City Studio Youth Programs

In order to support SFAI’s continuum of City Studio programs for thirteen- to nineteen-year-old Bay Area youths, the NEA has awarded SFAI one of the its largest awards in the arts-and-education category.

With the grant, SFAI and the Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne will partner to develop graduate-level open-source digital courseware that will enable collaborative, interactive art research and creation.

03/29/08 SFAI Cancels Public Forum and Closes Abdessemed Exhibition

In response to a series of violent threats by animal-rights extremists, SFAI announced today that the public discussion on Adel Abdessemed’s exhibition Don’t Trust Me has been canceled and the exhibition itself, which was temporarily suspended, has now been permanently closed.
