05/01/12 Roberta Smith, Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and Beverly James Honored at 2012 Commencement Ceremony

Contemporary art college SFAI honors famed art critic Roberta Smith, Bay Area poet, painter, activist and publisher Lawrence Ferlinghetti, and Trustee Emeritus Beverly James at Institute’s 134th Commencement Ceremony on Saturday, May 12. Smith and Ferlinghetti are slated to speak at the event. 

04/20/12 SFAI Presents 2012 Graduate Events

SFAI will stage its MFA Graduate Exhibition and Vernissage Preview Party at the Phoenix Hotel in the Tenderloin from May 10–13; the MFA Film Screening at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) on the afternoon of May 11; and the MA Thesis Symposium at SFAI’s Russian Hill campus on May 7.

04/13/12 Hou Hanru to step down as SFAI’s Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs in June 2012

Hou’s final exhibition at the Walter and McBean Galleries will be Lin Yilin: Golden Journey (May 3–July 28), which documents new San Francisco-based work by Chinese performance artist Lin Yilin.

04/12/12 Faculty member Carlos Villa receives prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship

A faculty member at SFAI since 1969, Villa’s body of work encompasses painting, collage, performance, curating, cultural activism, and community actions, often exploring his identity as a Filipino American.

03/02/12 SFAI faculty member and alumna JD Beltran appointed President of the San Francisco Arts Commission

SFAI is proud to announce that San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee has appointed faculty member and alumna JD Beltran as the President of the San Francisco Arts Commission. She was sworn in on March 1, 2012 at City Hall, and will serve a four-year term.

01/23/12 SFAI remembers Robert Nelson, 1930-2012

The San Francisco Art Institute is saddened to acknowledge the death of experimental filmmaker Robert Nelson, an SFAI alumnus and faculty member who helped build the school’s Film Department in the 1960s.

12/13/11 HFBK/Art School Alliance Scholarship awarded to Marcella Arreaga

The Art School Alliance Scholarship was launched in 2010 with the goal of intensifying links and exchange with renowned art universities within Europe, China, and the United States. Each spring semester, one SFAI undergraduate student is chosen to travel to Hamburg and participate in an innovative work/live environment with students from five other institutions.

An artist and educator with 18 years of experience teaching painting and drawing, Bamber will teach two courses during the Fall 2012 semester, and will also pursue studio work at Headlands Center for the Arts in Sausalito.
