Superobjects: Subversive Souvenirs

John de Fazioʼs work centers on commemorative sculptures that objectify alternative reactions to pivotal moments in pop culture. His stated goal is “the desire to make allegorical fetish objects as cultural artifacts that serve as historic relics for the future.” Recent animations such as The Making of the John Waters Bong and JFK Casper explore the documentation of process involved in the creation of a work of art. In 2013, de Fazio exhibited six of his psychedelic beer stein and crematory urns at The American Museum of Ceramic Art, Pomona, California. Three of his politically themed “superobjects” were recently admitted into the collection of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, including the JFK Crematory Urn and the Ground Zero bust. In a past life, de Fazio created the “Mutant Toys” 3D stop-motion animation characters for Pee-weeʼs Playhouse and was an art consultant at the MTV headquarters in Times Square, New York.

John de Fazio is Visiting Faculty in Sculpture at SFAI.
