international student orientation

Mandatory New International Student Orientation

A mandatory orientation program is held prior to the start of New Student Orientation. A detailed orientation schedule will be sent to you via email a few weeks before orientation begins. During orientation you will meet faculty, learn about SFAI and San Francisco, review your responsibilities as an international student in the U.S., and have many opportunities to meet both new and current SFAI students. In addition to providing you with important information, orientation is a lot of fun. It is strongly recommended that you plan to arrive to San Francisco ten to fifteen days, but at least three to five days, before the start of orientation so you have enough time to recover from jetlag, secure off-campus housing (if applicable), and feel somewhat acquainted with the city.

Writing Placement Examination

All undergraduate students are required to take the Writing Placement Examination (WPE), which will take place during New Student Orientation. The WPE is administered so the Liberal Arts faculty can examine student writing for curricular development. The examination is also used in the academic advising process to ensure you are placed in the appropriate academic courses. For more information, see the Writing Program page.

Incoming international exchange students are not required to take the WPE.
