housing
SFAI students live in both student and non-student accommodations. However, all new SFAI undergraduate students, including transfers, are required to live in student housing during their first academic year. For more information, see the Housing and Residential Life page or contact Anthony Molinar, Assistant Director of Student Life for Housing and Residential Life, at amolinar@sfai.edu or 415.351.3556.
Student Housing
SFAI has two residence halls, Sutter Hall and Abby Hall, both centrally located near Union Square. The neighborhood is home to galleries and alternative art spaces, shops, and restaurants, and there are multiple public transportation options. Single, double, and triple rooms are available.
Non-Student Housing
Many SFAI students live in non-student housing throughout the Bay Area, although the majority live in San Francisco. San Francisco is an expensive city, but most students do find comfortable, safe accommodations at an affordable rate. San Francisco is a collection of eclectic and unique neighborhoods, and rental prices vary from neighborhood to neighborhood. The website www.craiglist.org can be useful in find housing and roommates. You will also want to consider our campus locations when choosing an apartment.
For more information, including a downloadable Living in San Francisco Housing Guide, see Off-Campus Living.
Short-Term Housing
San Francisco is home to many hotels and hostels that some students choose to stay in until they determine their long-term housing plan. If you need to find short-term housing for the first few weeks after you arrive to San Francisco, consult the Living In San Francisco guide for a list of options.
