Getting Started

SFAI students may study abroad anytime between the second semester of their sophomore year and the first semester of their senior year, but you can start planning as soon as freshman year. Review the process below, and download this helpful guideline to keep you on-task.

1. Meet with the Global Programs Office to discuss your Goals and Timeline

  • What do you want out of this experience?
  • Where do these fit in your list of priorities?
  • Language
  • Getting out of your comfort zone
  • Studying with specific artists
  • Large or small school
  • Housing options
  • Structure and independence
  • Access to museums and galleries
  • Heritage seeker
  • Time to travel
  • Studio space
  • Understand deadlines and application/portfolio requirements

2. Meet with your Academic Advisor

  • Create a mock-up schedule to model both before and after based on semester you want to study off campus
  • Discuss timeline for classes needed for eligibility
  • English Composition A & B
  • Humanities A & B
  • 2 of 3 Art History courses
  • Consider taking one more lecture-based class each semester this year and next
  • Start building relationships with professors to ask for letters of recommendation

3. Discuss your Plans with Family and Friends

  • Ask for opinions / ideas / history
  • Talk honestly and openly about your goals
  • Be prepared to address safety and health concerns
  • Have a frank financial discussion

4. Begin the Financial Planning Process Now

  • Put together a budget
  • All SFAI Financial Aid transfers except work study
  • Additional costs = Airfare + Housing + Travel + Living Expenses
  • Meet with Financial Aid
  • Research and apply for study abroad scholarships

5. Identify the Best Program for you

  • Attend study abroad info sessions
  • Meet with the Global Programs Office
  • Talk to former study abroad students
  • Talk to your professors, friends, international and exchange students
