Darcy Padilla
Visiting Faculty

Documentary photographer living in San Francisco recently honored with the prestigious W. Eugene Smith Grant for Humanistic Photography for "The Julie Project." Story of the life and death of Julie spans 18 years starting with a chance encounter in 1993, and provides an in-depth look at poverty, AIDS, and social issues affecting American Society. Through thousands of photographs, as well as letters, journal entries, logs of phone conversations and newspaper cuttings, I documented Julie’s life. What motivates me as a photographer is a novelist’s question: How does a child born into this world like every other child, get to be Julie?

Awards include World Press Photo Award, Contemporary Story, 2010; Getty Grant for Editorial Photography, 2010; San Francisco Arts Commission, Cultural Equity Grant, 2006; Soros Foundation/Open Society Institute Individual Fellow, 1998; John Simon Guggenheim Foundation, Fellow, 1995; and Alexia Foundation for World Peace, Professional Grant, 1991.
