Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series

Think Art – Act Science, Panel Discussion
Wednesday, September 21, 2011 - 7:30pm
Lecture Hall
San Francisco Art Institute
800 Chestnut Street
San Francisco,

This panel discussion elaborates on themes presented in the exhibition Think Art – Act Science. The show, in the Walter and McBean Galleries from September 21 to November 12, is a collection of projects by artists who have engaged in creative dialogue with scientists from a variety of disciplines.

Hou Hanru will lead the discussion with exhibition curator Irène Hediger and artists Alexandre Joly, Pe Lang, and Alina Mnatsakanian.

Transforming the galleries into a working laboratory, the exhibition Think Art – Act Science features eight artists who took part in the Swiss artists-in-labs program, completing an immersive nine-month residency in a scientific research institute or a university science department.

The exhibition is arranged around three main research themes addressed by artistic investigations: Ecology and Environment, Spatial Awareness and Emotions, and Exploration of New Technologies. The works investigate the role of technical progress in our information society and how empirical knowledge is situated in a specific time or place.

The panel discussion follows the opening reception, which runs from 5:30-7:30 pm.

The international project Think Art – Act Science developed out of the Swiss artists-in-labs program, which began as a collaboration between the Institute for Cultural Studies in the Arts at the Zurich University of the Arts and the Federal Office of Culture in Switzerland.

SFAI’s exhibitions and public programs—a component of which is the Visiting Artists and Scholars Lecture Series—are supported in part by the Grants for the Arts/San Francisco Hotel Tax Fund. Think Art – Act Science is generously supported by swissnex San Francisco and the Swiss Arts Council, Pro Helvetia.
