Paul Laffoley’s beautifully intricate, highly coded paintings engage conceptual realms of spirituality, dimensionality, time travel, and the origins and future of humankind. Laffoley’s background in classics, philosophy, and architecture—as well as his longstanding interest in Eastern thought—informs his theoretical and obsessively researched diagrammatic works. Conceived of as “structured singularities,” Laffoley never works in series, but rather approaches each project freshly and individually. Working in a solitary manner, each 73.5 x 73.5 inch canvas can take one to three years to paint and code.
From 1966 to the present, Laffoley’s work has been exhibited widely—totaling over two hundred exhibitions—including at the Ward-Nasse Art Gallery, the Stefan Stux Gallery, and Kent Fine Art (where he is currently represented), all in New York. His work is chronicled in the monographs Paul Laffoley: The Phenomenology of Revelation (Kent Fine Art, 1989), and Paul Laffoley: Architectonic Thought-Forms: 1967–1999, To the Brink of the Bauharoque (Austin Museum of Art, 1999), which was published in conjunction with a museum retrospective at the Austin Museum of Art. A catalogue raisonné of the artist’s complete works is currently in preparation.
Paul Laffoley’s lecture is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Dissident Futures, organized by Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, on view October 18, 2013–February 2, 2014.
