Odd Piece: A space exploration
Monday, April 16 - Friday, April 27, 2012
Hours: Mon. through Sat., 9:00am - 5:00pm
SFAI Graduate Center
2565 Third Street
“Indeed the presence of that odd piece of furniture, your own body, seems superfluous, an intrusion. The space offers the thought that while eyes and minds are welcome, space-occupying bodies are not-—or are tolerated only as kinesthetic mannequins for further study.”
-Brian O’Doherty, Inside the White Cube: Notes on the Gallery Space
Odd Piece is an exploration and interpretation of the gallery space. The exhibition brings together artists working with installations to transform the Swell Gallery into something unexpected. The space will be overtaken by walls, barriers, and boundaries built specifically for and in the gallery. Odd Piece will not only transform the gallery into spectacle, but also invite the audience to be part of the works, process, and space. In the closing demolition party on April 27, the audience will participate in bringing the exhibition to an end by destroying all the installations.
Participating Artists: Amanda Klimek, Dimitra Skandali, and Erno-Erik Raitanen
The Swell Gallery is a graduate student-run art space dedicated to the examination of the role of the gallery in an educational sphere. The mission of the Swell Gallery is to provide a venue for the exploration and discussion of varying artistic perspectives from the student body, operating as a platform for exhibition, events, and dialogue.
