Mark Van Proyen has been a fixture in the Northern California art scene for three decades, writing art criticism for a wide variety of publications including Art Week, New Art Examiner, Art Criticism, Art Issues, Art in America, ARTnews, Art Practical, Bad Subjects, Squarecylinder, and San Francisco Arts Quarterly. He has also contributed catalogue texts for exhibitions held at the San Jose Museum of Art, the Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento, and the Círculo de Belles Artes in Madrid. From 1981–1998, he exhibited paintings, collages, and digitally formulated prints at several galleries and museums, and in 2000 his digital prints were included in an exhibition in Bejing. He has been on the faculty of SFAI since 1985 and was chair of the Painting Department from 2010–2012. Since 2010, he has been working on a novel titled Theda’s Island—a work of comic fiction about the tribulations of a totally fictitious art school.
