About the Lecture
Photographer Leo Rubinfien opens the PhotoAlliance's 7th Annual Our World Portfolio Review with a public lecture considering "street" photography. He draws on his contributions to the upcoming exhibition GARRY WINOGRAND—the first retrospective in 25 years of this prominent street photographer's work—offering insight into the exhibition in conjunction with its opening at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art on March 9. In this lecture, Rubinfien provides historical context for the work of Winogrand and his peers, interjecting perspective from his own 40-year career as a photographer, essayist, and curator.

Artist Bio
Leo Rubinfien first came to prominence as part of the circle of artist-photographers who investigated new color techniques and materials in the 1970s. His first one-person exhibition was held at Castelli Graphics, New York, in 1981, and he has since had solo exhibitions at institutions worldwide, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. Among his significant bodies of work is Wounded Cities (published as a book by Steidl in 2008), which explores the “mental wounds” that were left by the terror attacks in New York in 2001, and other attacks in cities around the world.

Rubinfien is also an active writer and curator, and has published numerous extended essays on major photographers of the 20th century. He contributed a memoir, “Colors of Daylight,” to Starburst: Color Photography in America, 1970-1980 (Hatje Cantz, 2010) and produced a personal and historical essay for Wounded Cities. From 2001–2004, he served as guest co-curator of SFMOMA’s retrospective of the work of Shomei Tomatsu and co-authored Shomei Tomatsu / Skin of the Nation (Yale University Press, 2004). His current project is a touring retrospective of the work of preeminent yet under-explored photographer Garry Winogrand, premiering at SFMOMA in March 2013.
