This pair of exhibitions shines a spotlight on the work of Master of Fine Arts students from the San Francisco Art Institute and Portland State University in midstream. MFA programs provide a span of time and a place for students to peel back to ground level or, at least, take things apart and put them back together in new ways. Itʼs not always pretty. Typically, the results of intensive research, exploration and experimentation are presented at the end of two or three years with little to mark the distance that has been traveled.

In contrast, these exhibitions, encompassing a range of media, concepts, and formal concerns, feature work-in-progress by students at various stages of their programs. Organized by professors Keith Boadwee and Tim Sullivan (SFAI ), and Pat Boas, Brenden Clenaghen, Julie Perini, Sean Regan, and Patrick Rock (PSU), and the gallery directors of the Swell Gallery (SFAI) and the Portland State Art Department Galleries (PSU), these exhibitions provide a larger context and widen the circle, putting students at each institution in dialogue with each other – indirectly through the work exhibited and directly through visits and discussion.
