Simone Leigh engages in an object-based, sculptural exploration of black female subjectivity. Her work is structured as an ongoing ethnographic practice, informed by both ancient African and African American object-making, and bridges abstracted forms with iconic images. Leigh's recent series of terracotta and porcelain female busts are noted for distorted features and delicately crafted ceramic roses that sprout up in place of the face or hair. Leigh’s work has recently been presented in a solo exhibition at The Kitchen, New York.

Juried by Mads Lynnerup

A woman wielding a machete that cuts through an overgrown field of abstract splashes of paint and colors; figurative and nonfigurative depictions of cracked surfaces with drippy strokes; voluptuous clouds; fireworks; a figure in a heavy downpour of paint; a couple’s electrifying embrace; a dog and a bird sitting by a telephone waiting for a call; mystifying silhouettes hanging inside a tent; and a father recalling his Malaysian childhood.

Bay Area photographer John Chiara captures cityscapes in a process that incorporates a hybrid of photographic media. He creates one-of-a-kind photographs in a variety of hand-built cameras, the largest of which is a 50” x 80” field camera transported by the artist on a flatbed trailer. Once a location is selected, he situates and then physically enters the camera, maneuvering in near total darkness positive color photographic paper on the camera’s back wall. Throughout the exposure, his instinctual control limits the light entering the lens, using his hands to burn and dodge the image.

Drawing from his experiences living on both sides of the US-Mexico border in the late 1970s, and also in Europe in the late 1990s, SFAI alumnus Enrique Chagoya juxtaposes secular, popular, and religious symbols in order to address the ongoing cultural clash between the United States, Latin America, and the world. He uses familiar pop icons to create deceptively friendly points of entry for the discussion of complex issues.

In a 1956 ARTnews article, critic Hubert Crehan asked “Is There a California School?” and answered with a resounding “No,” claiming that the Abstract Expressionist school around the California School of Fine Arts (now SFAI) was too disparate and incoherent to constitute a “school.” The same year, Richard Diebenkorn made a case for a San Francisco School of Figuration in a symposium assembled at the Oakland Art Museum.

Who Is Bozo Texino? is the picaresque chronicle of a 16-year search for the source of a ubiquitous rail graffiti seen on railcars for over 80 years—a simple sketch of a blank-staring character with an infinity-shaped hat and the scrawled moniker “Bozo Texino.” Bill Daniel rode freight trains across the West carrying a Super-8 sound camera and a 16mm Bolex, interviewing tramps and brakemen, and in his quest discovered the roots of a folkloric tradition that has gone mostly unnoticed for a century.
