employment options
On-Campus Employment
On-campus employment is limited to 20 hours per week when school is in session during fall and spring semesters. Students may work full-time during SFAI’s winter, spring, and summer vacations.
On-campus jobs for international students are restricted to non-work-study positions. Non-work-study positions are fully funded and paid for by the SFAI hiring department, while work-study positions are subsidized by the U.S. government. Since F-1 and J-1 students are not eligible for U.S. federal aid, they are ineligible for work-study positions. In order to get paid for on-campus work, you must obtain a Social Security number (SSN).
To access a listing of on-campus jobs, see SFAI’s job board. For more information on employment options, contact Megann Sept, Associate Director for Career Resources and Civic Engagement, at msept@sfai.edu or 415.351.3509.
Off-Campus Employment
In order for international students to work off campus, they must obtain the proper work authorization through the Global Programs Office or IIE and the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). All F/J off-campus employment must be related to your SFAI degree.
For F-1 students, off-campus work authorization options are:
Curricular Practical Training (CPT)
Optional Practical Training (OPT)
For J-1 students, the off-campus work authorization option is:
