Audiovisual Suites

The Audiovisual Suites at the San Francisco Art Institute are private rooms where students may work on in-depth digital projects for extended periods without distraction.  The Audiovisual Suites contain a peripheral set permitting work across a wide range of media. Suites are available on both the Chestnut and 3rd Street campuses. They include analog video decks, audio mixers, MBox 2 audio hardware, sound monitors, a CRT monitor, high fidelity headphones, etc. For authorization, booking, or other information, please call the Digital Media Studio at 415.771.7020 ext. 4497 or email edusupport@sfai.edu.

Digital Classrooms

The Digital Classrooms at SFAI have 24” iMac computers, inkjet printers, reflective/transparency flatbed scanners, and audiovisual equipment including full HD projectors. Digital Classrooms are available during scheduled classes with the exception the DMS2 classroom, which is adjacent to the Digital Media Studio and is available for general student use when not booked. Digital Darkroom (DDR)

The Digital Darkroom is the primary still imagery scanning facility at SFAI. Located on the Chestnut Street campus next to the Digital Imaging Studio, the DDR provides students with access to variably sized flatbed reflective/transparency scanners, dedicated film scanners, and color calibrated LCD monitors. This facility enables the creation of large archival scans from reflective media, oversized media, and film of multiple formats and stocks, providing users an easy transition between analog and digital workflows. Digital Imaging Studio (DIS)

The Digital Imaging Studio is SFAI’s large-format inkjet printing facility. Located on the Chestnut Street campus and open to students, faculty, staff, and alumni, the DIS provides access to large-format Epson inkjet printers capable of printing up to 44 inches wide. In the DIS, students can make fine art inkjet prints on standard and alternative ink jet media, such as cloth, thin Plexiglas, and sheet metal. As a hands-on printing lab, the DIS gives students the opportunity to practice the various workflows involved in fine art inkjet printing as well as experience in operating large-format printers. Digital Media Studio (DMS):

The Digital Media Studio is SFAI’s staff-supported computer lab located on the Chestnut Street campus. The lab is open to all students, faculty, and staff. The Digital Media Studio supports a wide range of media and workflows including photography, video, design, animation, 3D, web design and development, print, word processing, computer programming, etc. The facilities include dedicated video editing stations with mini DV decks, VHS decks, DVD decks, analog-to-digital converters, dual LCD monitors, and CRT monitors. Peripherals include reflective/transparency flatbed scanners, Mbox 2 audio hardware, pen tablets, LaserJet printer, and headphones. Graduate Digital Studio

The Graduate Digital Studio, located at the Graduate Center on 3rd Street, is equipped with reflective/transparency flatbed scanners and a large-format Epson inkjet printer.  The Graduate Center has additional computers, scanners, and a laser printer located in the lounge. Media Transfer Suite

The Media Transfer Suite enables students to digitize audio-video material from a wide variety of analog media or the reverse – to print digital material to analog media. Analog media formats supported in the Media Transfer Suite include miniDV, VHS, 3/4 inch, DVD, DV, Hi8, DVCPRO, Cassette, CD, Digital 8 Track, and 1/4 inch reel to reel. The Media Transfer Suite is located in the New Genres building on the Chestnut Street campus. Printmaking Film Output Studio

The Printmaking Film Output Studio is equipped with Epson reflective/transparency flatbed scanners and large-format Epson inkjet printers dedicated to film output. In this studio, students use the specific configuration of these printers to create high contrast, high density film used in the creation of images for screenprinting, lithography, and Polymer plates. This allows students to follow the design process from initial conception on the computer to final printed material produced by their own hand. Audio Recording Suite

The Audio Recording Suite is designated for advanced audio editing and recording. With a separate control room and recording booth, students are able to perform ADR, mixing, dubbing, music multi-tracking, and foley in both the digital and analog realms. This suite includes a 16 channel audio mixer, MBox 3 Pro, video and audio decks, high fidelity headphones, drum kit, analog synthesizer, midi keyboard, and professional monitors. The Tower, SFAI Radio Station

The Tower is SFAI’s radio station, and broadcasts to the world via streaming audio on the web. It is open to all students to produce radio programs.
