The San Francisco Art Institute has been a magnet for forward thinkers for the last 100 years. The integration of our academic and public programs creates a unique laboratory where artists can experiment with original ideas and create new work. Discover the leading art of our time by engaging in thought provoking experiences on site, off site and online.

Exhibitions and Public Programs

-present and commission new experimental work through artists’ projects, residencies and exhibitions.
-provide a forum for a diverse range of contemporary art and theory with public lectures, panels and symposia.
-document the artistic process and create a critical context in both print and electronic publications.

This year we have organized an active schedule of public programs which includes:
-international visiting artists in residence who make commissioned projects, give lectures, and participate in critiques and workshops with students.
-guest-curated group exhibitions often featuring a new premise by visiting international curators or other prominent local museum colleagues.
-exhibitions of California artists organized by the Art Institute’s Artists Committee: a group show featuring artists from the Bay Area, and the Adaline Kent Award exhibition for an outstanding, yet under-recognized California artist.
-ongoing public lectures series featuring a global roster of significant visual and performing artists, critics, writers, and curators.
-symposia, panels and special events where students, the public, artists and thinkers engage one another in our unique educational environment.

Digital Dialogues is the San Francisco Art Institute’s ongoing series of discussions on different aspects of artistic production, curatorial practice and theories of new media. Inaugurated in spring 2001 with a panel on “Curating Byte-Based Art,” during the Art Institute’s presentation of the exhibition Telematic Connections: the Virtual Embrace, this series brings artists, critics, curators, engineers and historians to engage in focused conversations about the multiple meanings and modalities of “the digital” across disciplines.
