Counseling Services at the San Francisco Art Institute is committed to meeting the emotional and psychological needs of the campus community.

What We Offer

  • All undergraduate and graduate students at SFAI are entitled to a semester’s worth of free, confidential, individual counseling sessions per academic year.
  • Students desiring long-term counseling or medication management will be provided with referral options.
  • Sessions are typically 45 minutes long and occur once a week.

Counseling Services at SFAI can help students with issues including:

  • procrastination/getting motivated

  • adjustment to San Francisco and SFAI

Time-limited support groups are available on topics such as:

  • alcohol and drug use
  • relationship issues
  • creativity and your life as an artist
  • gender, cultural, and sexual identity
  • disordered eating
  • maintaining healthy lifestyles
  • anxiety
  • depression

Confidentiality

  • All students who use our services have a legal right to privacy and can expect contacts with us to be kept completely confidential.
  • Only in the event of a threat of harm to oneself or another is the counselor legally and ethically bound to step beyond confidentiality to safeguard the well-being of all concerned.
  • Written permission must be obtained from students before any information is released to anyone.
  • Counseling records are maintained separately from any other records of SFAI.

Counseling Services seeks to create an open and safe relationship that allows students to understand themselves more fully while helping them to resolve problems that interfere with their personal, academic, and creative functioning. Counseling sessions provide a confidential and supportive place for any SFAI student who would like to explore and understand their thoughts, feelings, and actions. Dedicated professionals and graduate-level clinicians are dedicated to helping each student, through free individual or group counseling, to reach their goals. We encourage and support students’ development of self-awareness, personal responsibility, and healthy interpersonal relationships. At SFAI Counseling Services, we treat all individuals with respect and acknowledge and value diversity in the race, ethnicity, gender, religion, sexual orientation, ability, and class of our clients.
