SFAI could not exist without the larger community surrounding the school that not only supports SFAI’s work, but also offers our community opportunities for interaction, participation, and engagement.
Throughout the school year, there are a number of organized activities that encourage students to connect to the greater Bay Area.
Each fall begins with a service project during orientation that allows students to explore San Francisco and work together to provide service to a local organization. In 2010, incoming students partnered with the local parks department to clean up local beaches, promote native plants, and learn about the flora and fauna of the city. SFAI has also worked with the Department of Public Works to participate in a Chinatown clean-up day in preparation for the Lunar New Year and with the Hayes Valley Farm, an experimental repurposing of unused urban space.
Students can participate in planned projects or work with the Civic Engagement Office to propose, plan, and execute their own engagement projects. If you have an idea for a project or would like to learn about upcoming programs, please contact us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
