Jeff Magnin is a Continuing Lecturer in the University Writing Program at the University of California, Davis. Mr. Magnin audited classes at the San Francisco Art Institute during the summer of 1970, and that summer continues to animate his passion for fine art photography and his gratitude for the Art Institute itself. A graduate of Yale College, where he earned his BA in Economics and Political Science, and of Yale School of Drama, where he earned an MFA in Dramaturgy and Dramatic Criticism, Mr. Magnin has taught at California State University, Northridge; at the University of Southern California; at UC Berkeley; and, since 2007, at UC Davis, where, in addition to teaching Composition, he teaches seminars in American documentary film and in American 20th century drama.
Mr. Magnin collects “vernacular” photographs: black-and-white snapshots and photo albums, and machine-made photographs taken in booths (“photobooths” and “Photomatics”). Mr. Magnin’s collection, which includes photos from between the wars (1914–1945), is a tribute to the America that built this one.
