Robert Atkins is an art historian and writer. A contributor to Art in America and a former Village Voice columnist, his most recent book, Censoring Culture: Contemporary Threats to Free Expression, follows his best-selling ArtSpeak: A Guide to Contemporary Ideas, Movements, and Buzzwords; and ArtSpoke, its modern-art counterpart. A Fellow at the STUDIO for Creative Inquiry, he has created online resources since 1995, most recently ArtSpeakChina.org. He has curated exhibitions at the São Paulo Bienal and the New Museum of Contemporary Art, and is a founder of Visual AIDS—the initiators of Day Without Art and the Red Ribbon.
