Face It Pre-Symposium Event

Anna Shteynshleyger occupies a position at the confluence of many identities: Russian, immigrant to America, secular individual, Orthodox Jew, artist, and others. Her 2010 solo exhibition at The Renaissance Society, University of Chicago, featured approximately 20 works that explored this complexity. Produced over the course of five years during which Shteynshleyger renegotiated her relationship to Orthodox Judaism—which she practiced since the age of 16, after moving to the United States from Moscow—these intensely personal images go beyond merely documenting any single community and its struggles. Speaking of the universality of the artist’s work, curator Hamza Walker of The Renaissance Society wrote at the time: “Cultural baggage […] is something we all negotiate. Baggage is baggage regardless of its color, gender, or religion… In any case, regardless of who is viewing her photographs, Shteynshleyger refuses to cast off any cultural/ethnic baggage. Instead, she favors opening it up, unpacking it, repacking it, and having complete ownership over its contents.”

Shteynshleyger was born in Moscow in 1977 and has lived in the United States since 1992. She received her BFA from Maryland Institute College of Art and her MFA from Yale University School of Art. She has had solo exhibitions at Dvir Gallery, Tel Aviv; Moti Hasson Gallery, New York; and Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago. She is the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship and a Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation Award.
