academic advising

Undergraduate Academic Advising at SFAI plays an important role in your development and success as a student artist. Our mission is to engage with you in a collaborative, ongoing conversation about your academic interests and requirements, to ensure that you have meaningful experiences as you make timely progress toward the completion of your baccalaureate degree. We are here to guide you toward becoming confident, self-sufficient students who take responsibility for their educational experiences.

We encourage you to talk to us about: academic questions and opportunities, including course selection and registration; choosing and declaring majors and minors; academic planning for study abroad; developing a semester-by-semester academic projection for degree completion; and any other questions you may have. We can also assist you in understanding SFAI policies, requirements, and deadlines, and we can direct you to additional SFAI staff and faculty as necessary.

NEW STUDENTS

Register for and add/drop courses with your Admissions Counselor during the Add/Drop Period of your first semester. Please contact your Admissions Counselor, or the Admissions Office at admissions@sfai.edu or 415.749.4500.

CONTINUING STUDENTS

After the Add/Drop Period of your first semester, you will begin to meet with the Academic Advisor at strategic points during your time at SFAI:

  • We require students with fewer than 45 completed units to meet with an advisor prior to registering for courses.
  • We strongly encourage students with 46 or more completed units to meet with an advisor prior to registering to ensure enrollment in the appropriate courses to meet degree requirements.
  • We require students with 99 or more completed units to meet with an advisor to review the remaining requirements for graduation.

To make an appointment, email Peter Blackman at advising@sfai.edu or visit Studio 15 and sign up on the sheets posted outside of the office. You can also contact Peter at 415.351.3522.
