He earned a Master of Fine Art's degree from the San Francisco Art Institute in 1973. Nowinski subsequently embarked on projects that reflected a passion for social justice and that captured the social and cultural ambience of the Beat Generation in San Francisco, and the San Francisco Opera, for which he served as the official photographer, in the late 1970s and early 1980s.
