Together with the academic curriculum, SFAI's newly articulated exhibitions and public programs examine and promote innovative models of art production—models which lead to new definitions of art and of the role the artist plays in our era of globalized culture.

Exhibitions and Public Programs consist of five discrete but intersecting directions for investigating current constructions of contemporary global culture: Global Figures, which features one-person exhibitions of major artists from different cultures who have importantly influenced the current global art scene; New Models of Production, which features artistic creations within the context of economic, industrial, and technical productions under globalization; the making of different modernities; and the tension between developed and “under-developed” worlds; Acting Out in the City, which utilizes the galleries as a point of departure for large-scale projects of urban intervention that intensify the relationship between artistic productions and public spaces; Pacific Perspectives, which focuses on the dynamic scene of creation occurring across the Pacific Rim (ranging from the Americas to Asia) and brings new attention to San Francisco and its unique geographic, historic, and cultural position; and New Voices, which encourages the self-organizational initiatives of younger curators and other activists by providing them spaces and strategies through which to present their projects.
